Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvei Safonov suffered a fractured hand during his remarkable performance in the penalty shootout that led to PSG winning the Intercontinental Cup.
Safonov made four consecutive penalty saves, helping PSG defeat Brazil’s Flamengo 2-1 in the shootout on Wednesday, marking the club’s first global trophy triumph. He was lifted into the air by his teammates in celebration.
PSG coach Luis Enrique commented that he believes the injury occurred during the shootout, despite Safonov’s efforts in securing the trophy.
“I can’t explain it; it’s incredible. The player himself doesn’t know how it happened,” Luis Enrique said in translated remarks on Friday.
“We suspect it occurred on the third penalty kick. He made an unusual movement and injured it. He managed to save the last two shots despite the fracture, driven by adrenaline that allowed him to perform without feeling pain at the moment.”
“It’s remarkable how dedicated players like Safonov are, always ready to help the team, which is the attitude we strive for.”
In a video shared on the social media platform Telegram, Safonov didn’t specifically mention the incident but stated: “You know, no matter what happens, I can’t be broken.”
PSG announced on Friday that Safonov’s condition will be reassessed in three to four weeks.
As PSG’s backup goalkeeper, Safonov had not played until midfielder Lucas Chevalier sustained an ankle injury that has kept him sidelined since November 29.
Chevalier was on the bench for the match against Flamengo. PSG’s next fixture is a Coupe de France encounter on Saturday against fifth-tier Vendee Fontenay.
The Intercontinental Cup win capped off an extraordinary year for the Champions League winners, but Luis Enrique mentioned: “I do not dwell on our past achievements. My focus is on the present, which involves today’s training and Saturday’s match.”
“People in Paris thank me, but it’s part of my job. We are privileged to represent such a club, and we must continue on this path. What we have accomplished this year is unforgettable, but we need to maintain our focus on the present. Our goal is to close out this incredible year on a high note.”
