South Africa defender Olwethu Makhanya has become Rangers’ eighth addition of the summer, completing a move from Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old centre-back made 53 appearances for the Major League Soccer side after breaking into the senior team last year.
He has agreed a four-year contract at Ibrox, with an option for a fifth.
Makhanya said joining a club of Rangers’ stature is a tremendous honour and blessing, adding that he is eager to get started.
He added that playing in Europe has been a lifelong ambition and that arriving in Glasgow feels like a dream fulfilled.
After beginning his career with Stellenbosch in South Africa, his strong performances earned him a call-up to South Africa’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Although he did not feature at this summer’s finals, Rangers manager Derek McInnes believes he has the qualities to excel in Scotland.
“He’s very athletic and has significant potential,” McInnes said ahead of Friday’s Scottish Premiership opener away to Dundee United.
“He’s moving from MLS to a new country and a different style of football, but we’re confident his attributes will allow him to adapt.”
