Raphinha revealed to ESPN that he contemplated leaving Barcelona for a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia prior to Hansi Flick’s arrival in 2024.
The Brazil international, who recently extended his contract until 2028, felt pressured to leave following his initial two seasons at the club but was persuaded to remain by Flick, who succeeded Xavi Hernández as head coach.
Flick quickly integrated Raphinha into his strategy, playing him prominently on the left wing, where the former Leeds United player shone, contributing 34 goals and 26 assists in 57 matches as Barça clinched the LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Supercopa.
Reflecting on his career, Raphinha stated, “I’ve been playing football since I was 15, experiencing highs and lows, so there was a moment I considered what was best for myself and my family,” he shared with ESPN.
“The offer from Saudi Arabia was very appealing. It would have transformed not just my life, but the lives of my family and many others,” he revealed.
“We did consider leaving [Barcelona]. I felt it might be the right time, but after discussions with [Flick]—first over the phone and then at the preseason training—he managed to persuade me to stay. I’m grateful he did.”
Raphinha previously expressed his disappointment over perceived disrespect during the summer, particularly when reports surfaced about Barça’s interest in Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, which he found particularly frustrating.
He was particularly hurt when a viral image of a fan sporting a Williams shirt with his No. 11 went public, and he continues to feel that many wished for his departure.
“A lot of people wanted me out,” he acknowledged. “It’s hard to list them all. Suddenly, I wasn’t meeting their expectations of what I should be doing.”
“But I’ve always maintained a clear conscience regarding my contributions. I’m committed and dedicated. Perhaps they expected 30 goals a season, but that’s not my role. I’m a player who aids the team with hard work and dedication— that’s the essence of Raphinha. I’ll always give my all.”
“Because I didn’t match the player’s profile they envisioned, many thought I had no future at the club.”
“I know who I am and the journey I’ve taken to reach this point. The opinions of those who don’t truly know me or my struggles won’t impact my mindset.”

His total of 34 goals last season was a significant increase compared to the 20 he scored in his first two seasons combined.
This season, he has netted three goals in seven matches but has missed the last three games due to a thigh injury.
ESPN sources indicate that he is unlikely to return for Saturday’s match against Girona, but he should be available for the Clásico against Real Madrid on October 26.
Raphinha’s participation in that match will be crucial for Barça, especially after losing Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo to injuries recently.
