Real Madrid: Were…

Xabi Alonso remarked that Real Madrid‘s thrilling 4-3 victory in the Champions League against Olympiacos on Wednesday was vital for altering the team’s recent unfavorable trajectory, which had seen them go three matches without a win, placing pressure on both the squad and the coach.

Kylian Mbappé netted an impressive four goals, including a hat trick in just seven minutes, while Vinícius Júnior contributed with two assists, bringing Madrid to 12 points and solidifying their position within the top eight.

Prior to this match in Greece, Madrid had suffered a defeat against Liverpool and drew against Rayo Vallecano and Elche, which led to criticism regarding Alonso’s tactics and concerns about his rapport with key players.

“Today was crucial to shift our momentum,” Alonso shared with Movistar. “It was significant not only for qualification [from the group stage] but also considering our current situation.”

“We are all united. We understand the season will be long and demanding. There will be various challenges ahead. Some moments require endurance. Today marks a positive step forward.”

Alonso’s connection with Vinícius has come under scrutiny, especially after the forward was benched four times this season and showed frustration during a substitution in last month’s El Clásico.

“It’s unfortunate that [Vinícius’] goal was ruled out,” Alonso commented during the post-match press conference. “We had discussed such a move; it was a typical goal for him.”

He also lauded Mbappé’s “personality” and “leadership,” stating, “The impact he has, alongside those intangible qualities, is essential for building a strong team.”

Mbappé is currently the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League this season.

“There are definitely areas to improve,” Mbappé acknowledged to Movistar. “I understand there’s a lot of outside chatter. It’s normal for people to talk when you play for Real Madrid. We need to protect our players, the coach, and the staff. We’re all in this together. While we won’t oppose outside opinions, we are united. I know our fans support us.”
