WREXHAM, Wales — Wrexham‘s celebrity co-owners have sold a minority stake in the rapidly progressing soccer club to Apollo Sports Capital, a private equity firm based in the United States.

The announcement, made on Monday, did not disclose the terms of the deal. It includes Apollo’s investment in the redevelopment of Wrexham’s stadium and the surrounding area of this small Welsh town, which gained fame after American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the club in 2021 and produced a successful docuseries highlighting the community.

Founded in 1864, Wrexham is the oldest club in Wales and has experienced three consecutive promotions in the English soccer hierarchy, reaching the second-division Championship this season—just one level below the Premier League. As of this week, the team sits in 12th place out of 24 in the standings, marking their first return to the second division since the 1981-82 season.

“From the very beginning, our goal has been to build a sustainable future for Wrexham Association Football Club, infused with heart and humor. Our dream has always been to elevate this club to the Premier League while remaining true to our town. Achieving such growth requires world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo is definitely one of them,” stated Wrexham’s ownership in a club-distributed announcement.

Last year, Reynolds and McElhenney sold a stake in the club to another U.S.-based investment group.

Apollo has also recently acquired a majority stake in the Spanish soccer club Atletico Madrid, with the deal expected to be finalized early next year.
