LONDON — United States defender Chris Richards stated that he expects to return to action for Crystal Palace soon.
The 25-year-old American was removed from the field on a stretcher during the second half of Palace’s match against Arsenal in the English League Cup quarterfinals after suffering a significant cut on his right foot.
“Thank you all for your messages. I won’t be sidelined for long,” Richards shared on his Instagram account on Wednesday.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner did not provide a specific timeline for Richards’ return.
This Sunday, Palace will host Tottenham in the Premier League, followed by a matchup against Fulham on New Year’s Day.
“He sustained a foot injury from a stamp, which required stitches,” Glasner explained post-match regarding Richards’ condition. “I’m not sure how many stitches he received, but it was several. The doctor mentioned that it doesn’t appear too severe. I remain optimistic, but I can’t guarantee he will be ready for the Tottenham game; hopefully, he can return for the match against Fulham.”
Arsenal edged out Palace 8-7 on penalties after the match ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.
Richards has been a key player for the U.S. team, having been a regular starter. He missed the 2022 World Cup due to a leg injury, but he is anticipated to play a significant role for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad as they co-host the World Cup in 2026 alongside Canada and Mexico.
The U.S. squad is already concerned about the fitness of another vital player, as captain Tyler Adams tore his MCL on December 15 during Bournemouth’s 4-4 draw with Manchester United.
Adams is expected to be sidelined for two to three months during his recovery, and the U.S. hopes he will be fit to play by the summer.
