Manchester City’s interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is widely known, even though they did not table an offer before the Blues’ 17:00 BST Friday deadline.

Chelsea had asked suitors to submit bids by that time and were seeking around £120m for the 25-year-old. No formal proposals are believed to have arrived, and Chelsea now hope to keep their vice-captain.

City, however, do not consider the pursuit finished and believe Chelsea remain open to a deal.

Manager Enzo Maresca is an admirer of Fernandez. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he made Fernandez captain in Reece James’ absence and selected him in 79 of his 92 matches. While Fernandez is naturally a holding midfielder, Maresca frequently used him higher up the pitch when Cole Palmer was sidelined, and the Argentine responded with a career-best 15 goals last season. That versatility could see him fill multiple roles at City if a move materialises.

City have also added England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest this summer, giving Maresca extra options and the possibility of pairing Anderson with Fernandez should the latter arrive.

Whether City and Chelsea can find an agreement, or Chelsea hold firm on their stance, remains uncertain.

Another midfield target under consideration is Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. City have explored a move for the England international, who has turned down new contract offers at the Cherries. His current deal runs until 2028, and Bournemouth have been clear they want to keep him. They rejected a £64m offer from Chelsea last month and discouraged further approaches, while interest from Arsenal has also been rebuffed.

Scott’s energy, ball carrying, and comfort in a possession-focused setup fit Maresca’s style, and his delivery into the box plus duel-winning ability add to his appeal.

Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister is also on Maresca’s radar. The Argentine has two years left on his Anfield contract and, despite a difficult 2025-26 campaign, has been a regular presence for the Reds. As a Premier League title winner, he would bring immediate top-flight know-how and could slot straight into City’s midfield.
