Spain secured a remarkable trio of individual accolades after defeating Argentina 1-0 to clinch their second men’s World Cup title on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Rodri was awarded the Golden Ball for being the tournament’s standout player, while Unai Simón took home the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper performance, and Pau Cubarsí won the Best Young Player award, edging out his fellow 19-year-old teammate Lamine Yamal.

Argentina’s star player Lionel Messi aimed for a historic third Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. Being the only individual to win this accolade multiple times since its inception in 1978, and leading Argentina to a second consecutive final at the age of 39, he had a compelling case for a third victory.
However, the award ultimately went to Rodri for his leadership during Spain’s championship journey. Messi had to settle for the Silver Ball while France‘s Kylian Mbappé received the Bronze Ball.
“It feels like the perfect narrative. I honestly didn’t see this coming,” he remarked after accepting the honor. “This team is extraordinary. We are now two-time world champions. Achieving this is incredibly challenging, and we accomplished it against a formidable opponent like Argentina.”
Having won the Ballon d’Or in 2024, the Golden Ball signifies Rodri’s remarkable return to elite status following a ruptured ACL nearly two years ago.
“I take pride in this, and I hope future generations realize that it’s possible,” he said. “A player can touch the sky and then fall to the depths but still manage to rise again. This serves as an illustration of resilience; you must believe. It’s genuinely incredible.”
The Manchester City midfielder did not score in the tournament, but his exceptional passing and ball control were critical to Spain’s style of play. He became the 11th player to win the World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, and the Ballon d’Or.
Simón set a record with seven shutouts throughout the tournament, conceding only one goal in eight matches.
“The statistics reflect the solid defensive effort of the entire team. To win a World Cup, consistent performance is essential, and we achieved this collectively,” Simón stated.
“We faced strong teams like Cristiano‘s Portugal, Mbappé’s France, and now Messi’s Argentina, contending against players who can create danger at any instant. We managed to maintain our composure and control our emotions, which was vital.”
Mbappé secured the Golden Boot with 10 goals and four assists while playing for the French team that finished fourth. Messi, who went scoreless and assist-free in the final, finished with eight goals and four assists altogether, marking the first time in his last 12 World Cup games that he failed to score or provide an assist.
