Roldan: Significant void…

ATLANTA — United States midfielder Cristian Roldan stated that the upcoming friendlies against Belgium and Portugal offer a “great opportunity” for the U.S. national team midfielders to showcase their talents, particularly with the absence of injured teammate Tyler Adams.

The U.S. team gathered at a training camp in Marietta, Georgia, ahead of their matches against Belgium on March 28 and Portugal on March 31. Adams is missing from the roster due to a quadriceps injury he sustained while playing for Bournemouth on March 13.

“Tyler’s absence leaves a significant gap,” Roldan said during a Zoom call with journalists. “He contributes so much to our team with his energy, tackling ability, and leadership. Now it’s up to the rest of us midfielders to step up.”

“Midfield competition is fierce. With players like Weston McKennie and Tanner Tessmann performing well, along with Sebastian Berhalter and Aidan Morris, I need to find ways to set myself apart before the World Cup.”

“Regardless, if I’m not chosen, I’ll support my teammates to the best of my ability. The competition we face on the field will be strong. This is a prime opportunity for all of us to prove ourselves against top-tier teams.”

This training camp is the last chance for the U.S. men’s national team (USMNT) to come together before the squad is finalized in May. Roldan anticipates heightened intensity due to manager Mauricio Pochettino’s philosophy that no roster spots are secure.

“I expect fierce competition here and in every camp, but especially this one leading up to the World Cup, as nothing is guaranteed,” Roldan expressed. “It’s crucial to prove ourselves daily. These friendlies are significant; we’re up against well-respected European teams with rich histories. It’s our moment to showcase our skills and capabilities.”

Roldan is one of ten players in the current camp with prior World Cup experience, having participated in the 2022 tournament. He believes that veteran presence will be essential heading into the summer, particularly given the high expectations surrounding the team.

“Experience is critical during pivotal moments in games, whether it’s conceding a goal or rallying your teammates. Having players who’ve endured these situations is invaluable,” said the Sounders midfielder. “With the added pressure of hosting the World Cup and performing well, relying on our experienced players will be essential.”

“We possess enough experienced players who have thrived in high-pressure situations, especially in Europe. We are prepared and focused on making this camp a success.”

Roldan also mentioned younger players like Villarreal defender Alex Freeman, acknowledging that Freeman’s all-around abilities position him well for potential selection to the World Cup squad.

“He adds a lot to our team, and I’m thrilled for him,” Roldan shared. “I hope he continues to develop at Villarreal, although it’s going to be a challenge to make an impact in LaLiga.”

“The competition level is incredible over there, but I am confident he will unlock even more of his potential and grow as a player.”

Freeman expressed that he has sought Roldan’s advice since joining MLS with Orlando City and playing for the national team.

“Cristian has been a great resource for me,” said Freeman. “When I think of team leaders, Cristian Roldan is one of the first names that comes to mind. He has consistently performed well throughout my journey from the academy to the first team.”
