Portugal was just moments away from qualifying for the 2026 World Cup when Cristiano Ronaldo found the net twice in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Hungary on Tuesday in Lisbon.
While Portugal didn’t secure their World Cup spot just yet, Ronaldo added another milestone to his remarkable career with his two goals.
Ronaldo’s first goal allowed him to surpass former Guatemala player Carlos Ruiz, setting a new record for the most goals in World Cup qualifying with 40. His second goal extended that record to 41 goals scored in 50 qualifying matches.
He netted both of his goals in the first half, putting Portugal ahead after Hungary briefly took the lead with a goal from Attila Szalai in the eighth minute. Despite Portugal holding a 2-1 advantage, Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai scored a late equalizer during stoppage time in the second half, dampening the celebrations for Roberto Martinez’s squad.
This outcome left Portugal with 10 points from four matches, while Hungary remained in second place with five points. Ronaldo and his teammates have the opportunity to secure qualification in the November window with upcoming matches against Ireland and Armenia.
These goals also marked Ronaldo’s 948th career goal across club and international play, and he has achieved five or more goals in five out of the six World Cup qualifying cycles he has participated in.
Next summer, when he turns 41, Ronaldo is expected to be part of the squad aiming to help Portugal win their first-ever trophy at the 48-team World Cup taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
