Wayne Rooney has expressed that if Michael Carrick is appointed as interim manager of Manchester United, that decision would be a “no-brainer,” and he suggested that Roy Keane could also have a significant role.
Sources indicate that United is on the verge of hiring Carrick as their interim manager through the end of the season, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
A formal announcement is expected within the next 48 hours, with Carrick likely to begin training sessions at Carrington on Wednesday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer met with officials Berrada and Wilcox on Saturday, but it seems Carrick has emerged as the preferred candidate.
Darren Fletcher, another former United midfielder, has managed the team in their last two matches: a Premier League draw against Burnley and an FA Cup loss to Brighton.
On his podcast, “The Wayne Rooney Show,” Rooney emphasized the importance of having individuals who are familiar with the club: “Whether it’s Michael, Fletch, John O’Shea, or myself, we need people who understand Manchester United.” He added, “Roy Keane has his opinions, but having people who know and care for the club is crucial.”
He noted that the club has lost its sense of identity and community, stating, “This is a chance to restore that and revive the spirit of Manchester United.”
When asked if he would join Carrick’s coaching staff, Rooney, who was on vacation with Carrick in Barbados last week, responded, “Absolutely. It’s a no-brainer. Just to clarify, I’m not begging for a job—if asked, I would certainly join. The priority is to appoint the right manager.”
Following his playing career, Carrick served on the coaching staff under José Mourinho and Solskjaer. He was appointed caretaker manager before Ralf Rangnick took over as interim coach, during which he went unbeaten in three matches, securing victories against Villarreal and Arsenal, along with a draw against Chelsea.
He has been out of coaching since leaving Championship team Middlesbrough.
Rooney praised Carrick’s intelligence and past performance, stating, “He has done an excellent job at Middlesbrough, and he would be a solid fit at United. He’s deeply connected to the club and understands its essence.” He added, “There’s currently a lack of top managers available, and it comes down to either Ole or Michael. Carrick’s familiarity with the club is critical for its future.”

Rooney concluded, “Michael has a strong love for the club and is eager to contribute. This is a chance for him to prove himself over the next few months and potentially convince the owners to keep him for the long term.” He cautioned, however, that if they do not see the desired results, Thomas Tuchel stands out as a prominent candidate for the position.
Manchester United is set to face their rivals, Manchester City, in the Premier League on Saturday.
