Manchester United has officially parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim, the club announced.
The decision was revealed on Monday, just a day after Amorim’s unexpected press conference following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, where he openly challenged the club’s management to “do your jobs.”
Sources within the club have stated that the decision was not due to a rift between Amorim and director of football Jason Wilcox. Instead, it stems from the hierarchy’s belief that “enough signs of evolution and progress” have not been observed.
Still, many believe that the timing of the decision was significantly influenced by Amorim’s comments at Elland Road, particularly those directed at the club and Wilcox.
During a press conference on Friday, shortly before facing Leeds, the Portuguese manager expressed his disappointment over inactivity in the January transfer market.
After the match on Sunday, he further emphasized his desire to transition from coach to manager and pointedly urged Wilcox to fulfill his responsibilities.
According to ESPN sources, Amorim was “fully aligned” with the club’s transfer strategy.
They maintain that the decision was made to provide a capable and dedicated squad the best opportunity for success.
Amorim’s tenure at United has been marked by turbulence over the past 14 months since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024.
During his time, he managed to secure 24 victories in 63 matches, with only 15 wins in the Premier League.
He leaves the team currently in sixth place in the Premier League following eight wins from 20 matches this season.
Darren Fletcher, the current head coach of the under-18 team, is expected to take charge ahead of the upcoming match against Burnley on Wednesday.
