San Diego Makes Major…

The San Diego Wave have secured the signing of Brazil international forward Ludmila from Chicago Stars FC for an initial transfer fee of $800,000. The announcement was made on Tuesday.

This transfer marks the second-highest fee for an intraleague transfer in NWSL history, surpassed only by the $1.25 million that Gotham FC paid for Jaedyn Shaw from the North Carolina Courage last September.

If certain undisclosed performance metrics are met, Ludmila’s transfer could ultimately be worth up to $1 million.

“We are thrilled to have Ludmila joining us in San Diego,” said Wave sporting director and general manager Camille Ashton in a news release. “She possesses not just remarkable talent, but also fills the gaps in our current roster.”

“Her ability to play in various attacking positions offers our coaching staff more tactical flexibility. Her creativity and movement will enhance our offensive capabilities and we believe she will be a crucial asset in achieving the Club’s future success.”

Ludmila made a significant impact in her debut season with Chicago, scoring 10 goals in 24 matches, placing her fourth in the league’s Golden Boot race.

Unfortunately, Chicago ended the 2025 season at the bottom of the NWSL standings.

“We wish Ludmila all the best as she embarks on this new chapter,” commented Chicago Stars head coach Martin Sjögren. “I’m confident that our newly acquired forwards like Ivonne Chacón and Ryan Gareis, alongside our promising talents Jameese Joseph and Micayla Johnson, will create a formidable front line.”

“These players will be supported by experienced midfielders, including our recent acquisition of Brianna Pinto. We’re also looking forward to the return of Mallory Swanson later this year to further enhance our momentum.”

San Diego ended up sixth in the standings last season and was eliminated by the Portland Thorns in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

With her move to San Diego, Ludmila may fill the void left by Delphine Cascarino, who is reportedly close to joining the London City Lionesses in the English Women’s Super League.

At 31 years old, Ludmila has earned 63 caps for Brazil, scoring six goals, and was part of the squad that secured a silver medal behind the United States at the 2025 Paris Olympics.

“From the moment Cami and the organization expressed their interest in me, I was determined to join this team and represent this city,” Ludmila stated. “I’m not here just to play; I’m here to give my all and strive for trophies. I’m thrilled to showcase my skills in front of the supporters and to score many goals in these colors.”
