The head coach of Santos, Juan Pablo Vojvoda, has high hopes for his star attacking players, Neymar and Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa, as they embark on a new season.
Gabigol made a triumphant return to Santos by scoring in his first match back, leading the team to a 2-1 victory over Novorizontino in the Campeonato Paulista on Saturday.
Neymar, having recently signed a contract extension, will remain with Santos until December.
“Both Neymar and Gabigol are familiar with this club and with each other,” Vojvoda commented.
“They both want the best for Santos. However, I want them to take full responsibility for their roles. I want them to contribute individually and collectively to the team’s success.”
“I will push them to achieve this, as I know they are capable. The coaching staff will devise the strategies needed to maximize their performance.”
After Saturday’s win, Neymar was spotted congratulating Gabigol in the locker room.
Following minor surgery on his left knee on December 22 to address a meniscus issue, Neymar is currently on the mend, having helped Santos avoid relegation last season.
Vojvoda provided an update on Neymar’s recovery process, stating, “Neymar is doing well, and I’m pleased to see that he’s in good spirits.”

“Last year, some people doubted Neymar’s commitment during tough times when he was physically challenged, but he showed his dedication,” Vojvoda remarked.
“I am aware of the expectations Brazil has for Neymar, but I hold the same expectations for him here at Santos. He is recovering at a positive pace.”
Neymar is anticipated to return to the field ahead of the commencement of Brazil’s Serie A later this month.
