EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Pape Thiaw, head coach of Senegal, is calling for the support of the Senegalese diaspora in New York and beyond as they prepare to take on France in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.
Thiaw encouraged fans in the U.S. to rally behind the team to fill the gap left by supporters in Senegal who are unable to travel due to visa restrictions imposed by the U.S. government. Senegal is among several nations facing higher fees and a greater likelihood of visa denials.
The Teranga Lions typically enjoy robust support at international tournaments from organized fan groups like the Gaindé, known for their vibrant displays in Senegal’s colors and energetic dancing during matches.
“This is a political issue, and while I prefer to focus on sports, it’s clear we would love to have our fans with us,” Thiaw remarked on Monday, acknowledging the motivation fans provide, especially in challenging moments.
Despite missing their traditional supporters, the Senegalese team anticipates strong backing from fans residing in France, as well as a significant expatriate community in North America.
In Manhattan’s ‘Little Senegal’ area, there is a substantial community of nearly 20,000, with additional concentrations in Chicago and Montreal. Thiaw is optimistic that these North American fans will help make up for those unable to travel from Africa.
“We recognize the strong sense of patriotism among Senegalese people here, and their love for the national team,” he noted. “Tomorrow, you’ll see how vibrant our support can be, despite the absence of fans from Senegal.”
Thiaw is confident that the passionate support in the stands can be pivotal as Senegal embarks on a challenging campaign, starting with their match against France.
“It will be a tough battle against a strong French team,” he stated. “Starting off well is crucial for building trust and team spirit; we’re aware of that. Though it won’t be easy, we’re prepared and ready for this challenge. We have our strengths and can defeat any opponent if we execute our plan correctly.”
Following their opener against France, Senegal will remain in New York for their second group match against Norway on Monday. They will conclude their Group I schedule against Iraq in Toronto on June 26, where more fans from Africa are expected to attend due to more favorable visa conditions in Canada.
