Sevillas Almeyda Receives 7

The Spanish football federation has handed Sevilla coach Matías Almeyda a seven-match suspension as of Wednesday.

The former manager of the San Jose Earthquakes was dismissed late in Sevilla’s 1-1 home draw against Alavés during LaLiga last Saturday, following a confrontation with match officials.

The disciplinary committee of the federation detailed that the suspension comprises three matches for showing contempt toward the referee, two for grievances directed at the officiating crew, one for failing to leave promptly after the red card, and another for behavior that contravened public order.

After receiving the red card, Almeyda did not exit immediately, expressing confusion to the referee regarding the reason for his dismissal.

Almeyda later expressed regret for his behavior but still sought clarification on the red card decision.

Sevilla criticized the punishment as “excessive” and announced their intention to appeal the ruling.

This suspension prevents Almeyda from coaching during a vital phase for Sevilla in LaLiga, beginning with their upcoming match against Getafe, where the team’s top-flight status is in jeopardy.

This marks the second time this season that Almeyda has been sent off; the first instance occurred during a match against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu in late 2025.
