Coach Diego Simeone has announced that Julián Álvarez will be part of Atlético Madrid‘s lineup for their upcoming match against Athletic Club. Simeone expressed that this presents a “chance” for Álvarez to improve his circumstances after not being able to secure a transfer to Barcelona during the summer window.
During the summer’s World Cup, Álvarez made it clear that he wanted to leave Atlético, but the club denied his request to move to his desired destination, leaving him at Atlético as the transfer window closed.
The Argentine proved instrumental last season with eight goals in LaLiga and an additional 10 goals in the Champions League, aiding the team in reaching the semifinals. However, he has only played 24 minutes in the current season, facing criticism from fans during his brief appearance against Villarreal on August 23.
Simeone stated in a press conference on Friday, “He’s training very well. He will be included in the squad traveling to Bilbao, and we are expecting great things from him.”
Álvarez expressed a wish to leave Atlético, citing a desire to achieve his dreams with a transfer, which upset fans. The club’s management, including CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, was equally displeased with Barcelona’s interest, insisting, “We won’t negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances.”
“Life is full of opportunities,” Simeone remarked. “This is a chance for Julián to address various aspects of his life. Learning is crucial, and while we often judge, it’s essential to focus on growth.”
He added, “This moment will offer him significant learning, allowing him to resolve internal issues positively, so he can find happiness. We want him to be well, content, and proficient in scoring.”
Atlético brought in Jonathan David on loan from Juventus on the final day of the transfer window, as the team has been short on forwards with Álvarez unavailable and Alexander Sørloth out with an injury.
David had a tough season in Serie A, managing only six goals, but previously had a strong record in France’s Ligue 1.
Simeone commented, “We need David, especially to replicate the form he displayed at Lille. We’ve had discussions with him, and he possesses qualities that align well with our team’s needs. We require him to adapt swiftly and, despite being new, he appears motivated and eager.”
