MUNICH, Germany — After a 5-3 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, Manchester United manager Marc Skinner emphasized the need for the club to strengthen its squad to compete effectively in Europe. He remarked that this defeat could serve as the necessary wake-up call for the club to match the financial prowess of leading European teams.
Entering the second leg in Munich trailing after a 3-2 loss in the first match, United managed to equalize early in the game. However, Bayern struck twice in quick succession in the last ten minutes, eliminating United, who were making their inaugural run in the competition.
While United surpassed expectations by reaching the knockout stage, Skinner acknowledged the significant gap in resources compared to Europe’s elite clubs. He stated, “We will learn about the investment required to compete consistently at this level. We’re still on a learning journey as a club.”
“Given that we wear the Manchester United badge, there’s an expectation to be the best in the world, which we share. That’s the challenge — we aspire to greatness,” he added.
“We need to develop because we’re only eight years old. If we want to compete in the later stages of the tournament, we must understand the steps we need to take as a club. It’s a decision for us now — we need to determine our ambitions and learn from this experience. Sometimes, it takes a harsh reality to motivate a response.”

Due to numerous injuries, United had only four outfield substitutes available for the match. Skinner confirmed that several injuries stemmed from overuse.
In their most recent financial report, United’s wage bill was £5.88 million, roughly half of Arsenal’s spending from the previous season (£11.3m). Additionally, United’s agent fees amounted to £197k, significantly lower than Chelsea, who spent £1.08m.

Man United’s UWCL ambitions ended following Bayern’s comeback victory.
Bayern Munich advances to the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals after defeating Manchester United 2-1 in the quarterfinal second leg.
Skinner concluded, “We must create a team with high-level experience. Having the necessary depth to compete is crucial. Our current challenges highlight that we need to develop a squad that can sustain us at this level.” He added, “Even though it was a difficult match, I truly believe we could have advanced had all players been available, given our strong performance in the first half.”
“Our experience in this competition has been invaluable. Now, it’s about building a squad that possesses both depth and experience to succeed in the future.”
