Arne Slot has referred to Liverpool’s season as a “constant battle,” while asserting that their current placement in fourth position accurately reflects their performance thus far.
The Premier League champions maintained their unbeaten streak at eight games with a goalless draw against Leeds United at Anfield on Thursday. Nonetheless, frustration was palpable among fans as Liverpool struggled to apply consistent pressure on Daniel Farke’s squad.
This result places Liverpool in fourth, trailing six points behind third-place Aston Villa and twelve points behind front-runners Arsenal.
“Realistically, I think there are two teams [Arsenal and Manchester City] with Villa very close behind them,” Slot commented. “Arsenal created a gap against Villa, and at the moment those two teams are quite a distance from us, so we shouldn’t focus on them right now.”
“We’ve encountered challenges throughout the season. Initially, we achieved good results, but then we experienced a phase where results didn’t reflect our close games. Now, with seven or eight unbeaten games, it’s easy to think we’re soaring through the league, but that’s not the reality.”
“Every match is a challenge. We are usually the stronger side, but just marginally. We often find ourselves within a 20 percent difference in performance, and that gap is critical in determining the outcomes. I will continue to push for improvement, and the players will as well, aiming to expand that gap and find moments to elevate our performance.” Throughout the first 19 games, it has been a consistent struggle, with occasional streaks of luck balancing out our progress.
After a difficult stretch where Liverpool lost nine out of twelve matches across all competitions, Slot has worked to make his team more resilient in recent weeks.
However, this defensive solidity has sometimes come at the cost of attacking flair, which has not sat well with supporters.

“It’s clear that we’re not conceding many chances lately,” Slot noted. “We’ve faced tough opponents in the last seven or eight games, but generating enough scoring opportunities remains a challenge despite our ball possession. The players are making attempts to move the ball towards the wings and create opportunities, but sometimes you need a bit of magic or a set-piece to unlock a game, and that hasn’t happened consistently for us this season.”
Regarding the fairness of Liverpool’s current table position, Slot responded: “Yes, I think it’s fair, although the margins are tight. We could have accumulated three, four, or five more points if we had executed better during set-pieces, but given our overall play and comparing against Arsenal and City, it’s justifiable that we’re below them. Our current gap from them stems from the reasons I’ve outlined, and it wouldn’t be justifiable for us to be ranked above them based on our performance so far.”
