New Zealand defender Tim Payne, who gained viral attention after being highlighted by a soccer influencer prior to the World Cup, has officially signed with Club Olimpia in Paraguay.
Payne’s Instagram followers surged from 4,700 to 5.8 million after influencer El Scarso, known as Valen Scarsini, pointed him out as the World Cup player with the least social media presence.
This newfound fame attracted interest from clubs across Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Mexico, leading Payne to confirm on Friday that he had inked a one-year contract with Olimpia, following an earlier report by the Associated Press.
“This was not an easy choice,” Payne remarked. “After seven years with [the A-League’s] Wellington Phoenix and 149 matches, it was a significant decision.”
“I want to express my gratitude to the fans, my teammates, and everyone who has supported me, through thick and thin. I wouldn’t be here, representing my country at the World Cup, without your encouragement — it truly is the pinnacle of the sport.”
Payne is eager to compete with his new team. “I’ve always strived to be the best player I can be. Challenging myself at the highest level of South American football, including the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, is an incredible opportunity for my career,” he stated.
Recently, Olimpia secured their 48th title in Paraguay’s Copa de Primera Apertura.
“Club Olimpia stands as one of the largest clubs in South America, boasting a rich history, dedicated supporters, and ambitious goals that reflect its prestige,” Payne added. “I’m excited to rise to this challenge.”
