Lamine Yamal has raised injury concerns for Barcelona and Spain after being substituted shortly after scoring a penalty during Barça’s LaLiga match against Celta Vigo on Wednesday.

According to club sources, initial assessments suggest he may have sustained a torn hamstring, but further evaluations will be conducted through scans on Thursday as swelling subsides.

If confirmed, Yamal could be sidelined for the remainder of the season, putting his participation in the upcoming World Cup at risk, where he was expected to play a crucial role for European champions Spain.

“We need to wait,” Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick stated after the match. “He felt something, and it was evident he wouldn’t leave the pitch without cause after scoring the goal. We hope it’s not severe, but we’ll have a clearer picture tomorrow.”

Yamal secured a penalty in the 40th minute, but instead of celebrating, he immediately fell to the ground and signaled for medical assistance.

Replays revealed the 18-year-old clutching his hamstring following the decisive penalty that led to Barcelona’s victory.

He received treatment on the field for a short while before managing to walk off, but he couldn’t continue, leading to Roony Bardghji taking his place just before halftime.

Yamal is slated to make his World Cup debut with Spain against Cape Verde on June 15.

“I hope Lamine will only be out for a few weeks,” Barcelona midfielder Pedri commented. “I wish him the best; he needs to stay calm as he’s young and likely to recover well.”

Barcelona also faced a setback with Portugal defender João Cancelo suffering an apparent muscle injury in his right leg during the 24th minute.

“We hope their injuries aren’t serious and that they’re back with us soon,” Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García said.

Barcelona can ill afford to lose Yamal for any length of time as they strive to maintain their position in LaLiga.

Wednesday’s 1-0 victory has put Barcelona nine points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid with just six matches remaining.

The two teams are set to meet again for the second LaLiga Clásico of the season at Camp Nou on May 10.

Yamal has dealt with a sports hernia at various points this season but has managed to remain active, featuring in 45 matches across all competitions.

His goal on Wednesday brought his season total to 24, in addition to 17 assists.
