Liverpool has initiated formal discussions with Andoni Iraola as they seek to appoint a new head coach, according to sources at ESPN.
Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director, is overseeing the search for Arne Slot’s replacement following the Dutchman’s dismissal on Saturday. The club’s management aims to adopt a more aggressive and offensive style of play, with Iraola emerging as the frontrunner after his impressive tenure at Bournemouth, where he secured a sixth-place finish last season.
Sources indicate that Liverpool is aspiring to finalize the head coaching appointment by the start of the World Cup on June 11, although they emphasize the importance of a comprehensive recruitment process.
While there has been speculation about bringing in a former player for the coaching staff next season, sources have confirmed that no such overtures have been made as of yet.
Steven Gerrard has expressed his support for Iraola, stating on TNT Sports: “He has performed exceptionally at Bournemouth, and I believe his style would fit Liverpool well. However, let’s be honest; Liverpool Football Club is a highly appealing opportunity for many elite managers globally.
“Therefore, I don’t think he will be the only candidate in consideration. Given the connections between Bournemouth and Liverpool at the board level, they will certainly be familiar with him. However, there are other candidates who will undoubtedly be vying for this prestigious position in world football.
“In response to your question, I think he deserves to be in the mix, yes.”

Meanwhile, outgoing manager Arne Slot penned an open letter to Liverpool fans in the Liverpool Echo, stating, “I depart with complete confidence in what lies ahead. The players who have contributed so much to this club and have upheld its values, creating countless unforgettable moments, have established a solid foundation that will endure.
“Simultaneously, a new generation is rising, ready to craft its own narrative and take on the responsibility that comes with representing this club.
“Change is an inherent part of football, but I am certain that this club will continue to make its supporters proud.”
