Manchester City is gearing up to engage in discussions with Rodri this summer regarding a new contract, according to ESPN sources.

With just a year remaining on his current agreement, Rodri could potentially become a free agent in 2027 if there are no negotiations for an extension.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner remarked on Thursday that “you can’t dismiss the top clubs in the world,” referencing interest from Real Madrid, suggesting a possible future move.

City is determined to retain the Spain international, who plays a pivotal role in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Discussions for a new contract were delayed following Rodri’s serious knee injury in September 2024, allowing the midfielder to concentrate on his recuperation.

The 29-year-old has returned to regular play during the latter part of the season, starting nine of the last eleven matches for City, including the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley.

Now nearing full fitness, City is eager to meet with Rodri’s representatives to explore the possibility of an extension.

Sources inform ESPN that the club is aware Rodri might be interested in returning to Spain to conclude his career in La Liga.

Rodri joined the Etihad from Atlético Madrid in 2019 and has since collected 11 major trophies during his seven-year tenure at the club.

Along with Phil Foden, whose contract is also nearing its end, Rodri is one of City’s top contract priorities. Other players like Nathan Aké and Mateo Kovacic are also facing contracts that expire in 2027.

Bernardo Silva is likely to depart at the end of this season, prompting City to monitor potential replacements to strengthen their midfield ahead of the summer transfer window, irrespective of Rodri’s situation.

One of the targets is Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, although the England international is also catching the eye of Manchester United.
