Manchester United is currently grappling with the future of goalkeeper Andre Onana, as sources inform ESPN that his salary will increase significantly if the team qualifies for European competitions.

Onana has been on a season-long loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor since September.

However, since there is no obligation or option for a permanent transfer, the Cameroon international is expected to return to Old Trafford this summer.

The arrangement with Trabzonspor was partly made possible by a significant decrease in Onana’s wages at United after the club missed out on qualification for European tournaments for the 2025-26 season.

However, with Michael Carrick’s squad currently sitting third in the Premier League, and on track to qualify for the Champions League, Onana’s wages are set to revert to their original figures.

United insiders have expressed concerns that this increase could hinder their ability to generate interest in the 29-year-old during the summer transfer window.

This situation leaves the club with the option of covering a portion of Onana’s salary should they wish to facilitate another move, either permanent or on loan.

Onana still has two years remaining on the contract he signed upon his arrival from Inter Milan under former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023.

According to sources close to Onana, he prefers to return to the United squad for pre-season training and compete for his position.

His representatives anticipate discussions with the club before the end of May.

Meanwhile, United is pleased with the performances of Senne Lammens since arriving from Royal Antwerp and expect the Belgian to retain the No. 1 spot next season.

ESPN sources indicate that the club might also look to acquire another goalkeeper this summer to replace backup Altay Bayindir.

Man United must decide: Is Carrick the man, or someone else?

Altay Bayindir has attracted interest from Besiktas in January, having expressed a desire to move in order to boost his chances of making the Turkey squad for the World Cup.

United decided against weakening their squad mid-season but expect further inquiries regarding Bayindir at the end of the current campaign.

Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton, 39, signed a one-year extension last summer and is set to become a free agent in June.
