Manchester United is in the process of negotiating with Michael Carrick for him to take on the head coach position permanently, according to sources cited by ESPN.
This week, Carrick’s representatives have been in Manchester to discuss a potential two-year contract, which includes an option for an additional year.
The former midfielder for both United and the England national team has emerged as the club’s preferred candidate to replace Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed in January.
Since stepping in as interim coach, Carrick has led the team to 10 wins out of 15 matches, helping to secure their place in the Champions League.
At a press conference on Friday, Carrick remained tight-lipped regarding his future, indicating that a decision would be made soon.
“The future for me will be decided very shortly,” he stated. “We anticipated that this decision would come towards the end of the season, so nothing has changed on that front. There’s nothing significant altering that, and whatever happens next is just around the corner.”
According to ESPN sources, United has not dismissed the possibility of announcing Carrick’s permanent appointment prior to Sunday’s match against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
This match is set to be United’s final home game of the season, and Carrick is expected to address the fans following the conclusion of the match.
The timing of any announcement before the Forest game will depend on how quickly negotiations progress over the next 24 hours.
United’s season will conclude against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on May 24.
