Spain midfielder Gavi expressed his belief that FIFA should not impose penalties on Argentine players for their behavior following the World Cup final on Sunday.
FIFA has initiated an investigation after a number of Argentine players and coaches were involved in a physical altercation with members of the Spanish team right after the match ended. Gavi, who did not play during Spain’s 1-0 victory in extra time at MetLife Stadium, faced a push from Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes while attempting to defend his teammate Eric García. Just moments earlier, Paredes had grabbed García by the throat.
When asked about the involvement of the Argentine players in the incident, Gavi told reporters, “No, to be honest, I don’t think they should be suspended.” He commented on Tuesday.
Additional footage revealed Paredes and Nahuel Molina attacking Spain’s García and Rodri, while Argentina’s assistant coach Roberto Ayala was seen apparently striking Dani Olmo.
Gavi acknowledged the negative example set for children but noted, “There’s also that side to football that can be a bit more aggressive.” He added, “Perhaps the most reasonable action would be to send him off during the match and leave it at that, but at the end of the day, I think that’s just part of football.”
Argentina saw only one player, Enzo Fernández, receive a red card for a second yellow during stoppage time in the second half. The Albiceleste faced considerable criticism from pundits for their aggressive tactics throughout the game and their lack of sportsmanship afterwards.

Spain honored Argentina’s players with a guard of honor as they approached the podium for their runner-up medals, while Argentina did not reciprocate the gesture. Instead, Lionel Messi and his teammates turned their backs as Spain lifted the trophy.
Reflecting on the situation, Spain winger Olmo stated, “What matters are the values you wish to convey. We’re a role model for many generations, and I believe they should strive to be one as well.”
