Spurs Acquire Fernandes…

Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed the acquisition of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.

According to sources, Spurs outbid competition from Manchester United to secure the 21-year-old’s services for £85 million ($112 million), breaking the club’s previous transfer record of £65 million paid to Bournemouth for Dominic Solanke in 2024. They may soon exceed that amount, with sources indicating that a deal worth up to £100 million has been struck for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Even after their relegation to the Championship, West Ham remained steadfast on their valuation, and Spurs’ readiness to finalize an agreement reflects their commitment to supporting Roberto de Zerbi this transfer window.

“I’m thrilled about this new chapter. Spurs is a huge club, and the Head Coach was instrumental in my decision to join,” Fernandes expressed in a club statement.

“Our conversation felt very special. We share a vision of football that emphasizes teamwork, energy, and a determination to win every match. I can’t wait to get started, meet the fans, and give my all for the club.”

Spurs, who finished 17th in the Premier League for the second consecutive season, have also signed Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Martin Dúbravka as they look to strengthen their squad and avoid another relegation battle.

Fernandes joined West Ham last summer for an initial fee of £38 million following Southampton’s relegation. The deal included a clause that grants Southampton 15% of any future transfer, which means they will receive approximately £570,000 from Spurs’ purchase of the Portuguese midfielder.

Tottenham is poised to surpass the transfer fee for Fernandes with the arrival of Sandro Tonali, having reached an agreement with Newcastle United worth up to £100 million for the midfielder’s transfer.

ESPN had reported on June 20 that Spurs’ initial bid of around £75 million was rejected, but negotiations continued, leading to a revised offer that met Newcastle’s asking price.
