Tottenham Hotspur remains in the Premier League relegation zone after being shocked by a last-minute equalizer from Brighton substitute Georginio Rutter in a thrilling 2-2 draw that marked Roberto De Zerbi’s debut at home as manager.
Spurs seemed poised to end a 15-match winless streak in the league when Xavi Simons scored a stunning goal in the 77th minute, igniting joyous celebrations.
Simons contributed earlier with an assist for Pedro Porro’s opening goal in the 39th minute, but Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma equalized in first-half stoppage time.
However, the euphoria quickly turned to disbelief when Kevin Danso lost the ball in the fifth minute of stoppage time, allowing Rutter to curl in a shot that ensured both teams shared the points.
This result denied De Zerbi’s side their first victory under his management, and Tottenham will remain in the bottom three for another week, with just five matches left to avoid their first relegation since 1977.
Despite spending the entire week in the relegation zone, there was a sense of optimism surrounding the Spurs, especially with James Maddison surprisingly included in the matchday squad for the first time this season and Simons returning to the starting lineup.
The match began with fans waving white flags as De Zerbi exchanged pleasantries with his former players, all while the fourth official, Ben Toner, issued multiple warnings about encroachment onto the pitch.
Clear chances were few and far between, but Tottenham had a penalty shout in the 10th minute when Destiny Udogie was involved in a tangle with Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh.
Diego Gómez left the field due to injury shortly after, while Simons had a low effort that was deflected wide.
Brighton applied consistent pressure, with Spurs’ stand-in captain Micky van de Ven hitting a clearance off the post, denying a chance for Danny Welbeck after a threatening setup from Jack Hinshelwood. Antonín Kinsky then saved Welbeck’s subsequent header.
After Tottenham managed to survive a tense spell, their fortunes turned when Porro scored the first goal of De Zerbi’s tenure. Simons delivered a brilliant clipped ball, allowing Porro to head the ball over Bart Verbruggen.
Just two minutes later, the lead could have doubled when Dominic Solanke found Simons, who cut in but hit the post from eight yards; Porro’s follow-up was tipped over by Verbruggen, a miss that would later prove crucial as Mitoma equalized with a stunning volley from a brilliant cross by Pascal Gross.
Hinshelwood’s headed effort missed the target before the break, and Brighton continued their dominance after halftime, with Danso needing to intervene to block an effort from Mitoma.
De Zerbi received a warning soon for moving along the sideline, and a series of substitutions set the stage for a thrilling finish.
João Palhinha came close to scoring, while Lucas Bergvall made an immediate impact by assisting Simons’ goal.
Bergvall reclaimed possession against Jan Paul van Hecke, setting up a brilliant opportunity for Simons, who skillfully maneuvered against Mats Wieffer and curled a beautiful shot past Verbruggen.
Ecstatic scenes erupted in front of the South Stand, but Simons soon suffered from cramp, only for a dramatic late twist to unfold.
Danso held onto the ball too long inside the area, enabling Van Hecke to seize the opportunity and set up Rutter, who broke Tottenham’s hearts and kept them firmly entrenched in the relegation zone.
