Archie Gray marked his first goal for Tottenham with a decisive 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace, providing relief for manager Thomas Frank at the end of a tumultuous 2025.
After a disappointing stretch of five losses in eight matches that left the team in 14th place in the Premier League on Christmas Day, frustrations among Spurs supporters started to grow regarding Frank’s leadership.
Though there were no immediate concerns about Frank’s job security from club officials, Tottenham was eager to return to winning form, and Gray’s header in the 42nd minute clinched the match against the reigning FA Cup and Europa League champions.
This victory lifted Spurs to 11th place, just four points shy of fifth-placed Chelsea, as Frank prepares to face his former club, Brentford, on Wednesday.
Oliver Glasner’s Palace side suffered their third consecutive league defeat, underscoring the urgent need for reinforcements in the January transfer window.
Both teams had celebrated high-profile cup victories in May, but Spurs were missing one of their standout players from Bilbao, Cristian Romero, who was suspended for the match.
Kevin Danso took Romero’s place, receiving a yellow card just five minutes in as Palace started strongly.
Despite Palace’s early dominance, opportunities remained scarce, and Tottenham thought they had scored in the 17th minute through Richarlison, only to see their celebrations dashed by an offside call against Lucas Bergvall in the build-up.
Jean-Philippe Mateta tried his luck from 20 yards with a shot that went wide, while a free-kick routine presented another opportunity for Mateta that he couldn’t capitalize on, heading over the crossbar.
Justin Devenny and Adam Wharton both tested Guglielmo Vicario with tame shots, while Will Hughes curled an effort wide after a well-executed move by the hosts.
It appeared that Palace would soon take the lead, but against the run of play, Spurs struck in the 42nd minute.
Following a blocked shot by Randal Kolo Muani that resulted in a corner, Pedro Porro’s delivery found Kolo Muani at the back post, who then flicked it to Richarlison, setting up Gray for a close-range header to score his first goal for Tottenham.
Immediately after halftime, Spurs’ slender lead was under fire, as temporary captain Micky van de Ven blocked a volley from Yeremy Pino, which set up another promising chance for Palace. Pino delivered a magnificent outside-of-the-boot cross, which Nathaniel Clyne knocked down for Devenny, but he shot over the bar.
Glasner adjusted his tactics, bringing on Eddie Nketiah, but Palace squandered another opportunity 20 minutes from time when Jefferson Lerma set up Lacroix, who missed with his header.
Five minutes later, Tottenham thought they had doubled their score when Richarlison netted again following a brilliant cross from Mohammed Kudus, only for VAR to rule it out for offside.
Next, Palace captain Marc Guéhi nearly made his mark with a header that went over the bar. However, there was no grand finale to the game as Spurs held firm in defense, with substitute Wilson Odobert unfortunate not to equalize, as his long-range attempt struck the post, while Dean Henderson denied Rodrigo Bentancur as the match concluded at 1-0.
