Szmodics K.O.d as Ireland…

PRAGUE — Republic of Ireland midfielder Sammie Szmodics was taken off the field on a stretcher after losing consciousness due to a severe collision with an opposing player during a World Cup qualification playoff against Czechia on Thursday.

Szmodics collided with Czech player Stepán Chaloupek while both were attempting to play a high ball. He fell to the ground instantly, showing signs of involuntary arm movement.

Medical personnel attended to Szmodics for several minutes before carefully placing him on a stretcher, supporting his head and neck. The crowd erupted in song and applause as he was carried off the pitch.

“He was knocked out cold,” said Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrímsson. “At least he’s conscious now. He will stay here tonight.”

Hallgrímsson expressed hope that Szmodics would be able to return home the following day.

Playing for Derby in England, Szmodics had just come off the bench in the 115th minute of extra time when the incident occurred. He was substituted by Harvey Vale, making his debut for Ireland.

With the match tied at 2-2 after extra time, it proceeded to a penalty shootout, which the Czech team won 4-3. Czechia is now just one game away from qualifying for their first World Cup since 2006, while Ireland’s wait for World Cup qualification extends to 24 years.
