Dominik Szoboszlai has shared that discussions about a new contract with Liverpool are in progress, although he hasn’t yet made a decision about his long-term future.
The midfielder has been a key player for Arne Slot’s team this season, contributing six goals and four assists across all competitions. His remarkable performances have sparked speculation about his potential future as Liverpool’s captain, despite having a contract that runs until 2028.
“There’s ongoing progress, but no decision has been finalized. I’ll continue to give my best each week in training, for the team and the supporters,” remarked Szoboszlai when asked about the contract talks. “Let’s see what the future holds.”
“There are always discussions. You in the media tend to amplify those stories, as that’s your role. While talks are happening, no decision has been made as of now.”
“I’m clearly happy here, but this is football, and everyone has to consider that.”
Despite his standout performances this season, Szoboszlai has faced difficulties recently, including missing a penalty in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Burnley last weekend. He was also labeled “disrespectful” by Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane after attempting a backheel inside his own penalty area during last week’s FA Cup match at Anfield.
“It’s personally a tough situation,” he commented. “I made an error against Barnsley, but I believe it wasn’t meant to be disrespectful and I would have done the same against Arsenal, City, or Chelsea.
“I didn’t mean to pass to Giorgi [Mamardashvili], I just wanted to continue my run, but it came off like I was playing it back. Last Saturday, I missed a penalty, but I’m determined to keep pushing forward. I’ll take the next one and I’m confident I’ll score.”
“The key is to let it go; that’s the best approach, but it’s also crucial to learn from it. If you see me after every session, I’m putting in the work—I just can’t practice more than what’s allowed. I’ll keep practicing, and if I get another chance, I’m ready to take it.”

Liverpool is set to return to Champions League action on Wednesday against Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome. Currently, Slot’s side sits ninth in the Champions League standings and needs a strong result in France to improve their chances of automatic qualification for the knockout stages.
“It’s very crucial,” Szoboszlai stated. “We need to treat this game as a significant opportunity to advance toward the top eight. Throughout the season, we have many matches, and being in the top eight allows you to miss two games, which is vital. We need to be prepared because we are up against a really strong team.”
