Pulisic’s first half was remarkably vibrant and aggressive, showcasing two brilliant dribbles that led to the initial own goal by Paraguay. Balogun’s ability to capitalize on the opportunities created by Pulisic, while displaying his own scoring talents, hints at a promising future for American attack.

“You can hope for a performance like that,” Pulisic noted. “You can expect it, but you can’t be sure that level will show up in the first match.”
Tactically, the U.S. consistently exploited gaps in the Paraguay defense, making runs behind and forcing defenders to chase. Tillman’s role in the midfield was crucial, as was Balogun’s pressing efforts.
Balogun’s tenacity is not typically highlighted when discussing the AS Monaco striker; the focus usually rests on his skill—demonstrated perfectly by his powerful shot into the top corner for his second goal. Scoring twice in a World Cup match is a rarity for the U.S.; Balogun became the first American to achieve a multi-goal game in this tournament since 1930. “His performance was exactly what we expect from him,” McKennie said. “He aims to score goals, but today he also displayed another side. He engaged in tackles and put his body on the line. In the past, some may not have viewed him as that type of player, but he proved today that he is willing to do the tough work as well.”
There are no guarantees for what lies ahead. The status of Pulisic’s left calf remains uncertain. He was substituted at halftime due to an injury sustained in training two days prior. Although concerns about his availability for the upcoming match against Australia in Seattle next Friday are minimal, any early exits raise red flags given Pulisic’s injury history.
Moreover, U.S. fans have previously seen glimpses of promise from strikers, only to watch those hopes fade away.
However, Balogun feels different. If he continues this momentum, it could represent a game-changing development for the team—and for its premier star, Pulisic.
