MEXICO CITY — Goalkeeper Luis García delivered a standout performance in a shootout, propelling Toluca to victory over UANL Tigres on Saturday, marking the club’s first CONCACAF Champions Cup title in 23 years.
Jorge Díaz Price, who entered the match late in the game at the 88th minute, gave Toluca the lead at the close of the first half of extra time, but Joaquim Pereira equalized for Tigres with a header in the 113th minute.
During the penalty shootout, García thwarted shots from both Fernando Gorriarán and José Juan Purata, securing a 6-5 win for Toluca.
The Red Devils, who made an impressive comeback against LAFC in the semifinals, claimed their third CONCACAF title, their first since 2003.
This victory also secured Toluca spots in both the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, joining 2025 champion Cruz Azul.
CONCACAF has allocated four spots for next season’s Club World Cup.
UANL Tigres were seeking their second CONCACAF title and their first since 2020.
With Toluca’s triumph, Mexican teams have now won four consecutive titles in the Campeones Cup, with the Seattle Sounders being the last non-Mexican team to win in 2022.
Tigres forward Marcelo Flores, recently called up to the Canadian national team for the 2026 World Cup, suffered a right knee injury in the 77th minute. The team has not yet disclosed the severity of his condition, but the 22-year-old left the field visibly upset.
