Thomas Tuchel expressed his confidence in England‘s prospects at the 2026 World Cup, even though they face a “challenging group” that includes Croatia, Ghana, and Panama during the tournament in North America next summer.
The draw, which took place in Washington D.C., revealed England’s opponents, with former defender Rio Ferdinand leading the event alongside sports legends Tom Brady, Shaquille O’Neal, and Wayne Gretzky.
England will face Croatia, the team that eliminated them in the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, while they previously triumphed over Panama 6-1 in the group stage during that tournament. The matchup against Ghana marks their first-ever World Cup encounter.
“It’s a tough group and a challenging opener. Both Croatia and Ghana are reliable competitors in World Cups, representing proud and strong nations,” Tuchel remarked following the draw.
"As for Panama, I currently don’t have much knowledge about them, but we will certainly research them before the tournament begins.
"My experience has been primarily in Champions League group formats, where it's crucial to respect every game and focus on winning the group.
"While our group may appear tough now, we are optimistic and will arrive well-prepared."
One advantage for England is that they will kick off their campaign slightly later, with their opening match against Croatia scheduled for June 17, which Tuchel emphasized is a team they must respect.
"We didn’t seek any specific opponents; we just accepted the situation as it is. Having a few extra days leading into the tournament may help us, but later stages could be more packed," Tuchel added.

"Now that we know our opponents, we anticipate starting late in the tournament if some players are involved in European finals, which we hope they are.
"No one should be taken lightly. Croatia stands out as they are the highest-ranked team we faced from pot two, but Ghana is always equipped with talent and has made significant World Cup history.
"Panama will also seize their chance as an underdog. Every opponent deserves our utmost respect, and we will demonstrate that."
