Manchester United and current U.S. Women’s National Team goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce shared with ESPN that she “never realized the level of intensity in the Champions League” until she experienced it firsthand. She emphasized that every match feels like “do or die.”
Tullis-Joyce, 29, has maintained the exceptional form that earned her the WSL’s Golden Glove award in the 2024-25 season, contributing to United’s impressive defense this season.
After narrowly securing the final spot for last year’s Women’s Champions League by outperforming rivals Manchester City, United achieved victories against Valerenga and Atlético Madrid in the initial rounds, placing them fifth in the league stage.
She made her debut for the USWNT during a 2-0 victory against Brazil in April, and Tullis-Joyce is eager to secure her role in coach Emma Hayes’ strategy.
Tullis-Joyce joined ESPN’s Cristina Alexander, Ali Krieger, and Jeff Kassouf on Futbol W to discuss her ongoing Champions League journey.
“Representing United has been an absolute joy for me. I believe we have a fantastic team filled with remarkable individuals I enjoy being around on and off the pitch, and we have incredible players,” remarked Tullis-Joyce.
“I can’t express how wonderful our teammates are at United. We have all come together, bonded well, and are committed to achieving our goals.
“We certainly enjoy making an impact in the WSL during this season. It’s been an exciting journey, especially getting to the Champions League qualification, which was a nail-biter against Man City.
“I’ve never celebrated a draw as much as I did that time. Earning the Champions League spot and realizing how intense it is—where every match feels critical—was a revelation. Experiencing the thrill and excitement reminds me of how soccer should be, and I truly appreciate this side of the game now.”

United triumphed over Atlético Madrid even while a player down from the 41st minute after Dominique Janssen received a red card. Atlético also faced a red card for Alexia Fernández in the second half, but United secured a crucial 1-0 away victory.
“It’s a truly special moment. Facing Valerenga and Atlético Madrid has shown us how competitive these matches can be. Right from the start against Atlético, I realized the level we had to meet.”
“They raised their game, and we had to respond even more fiercely. With some players blocking shots with their bodies and others sliding in for tackles—some earning red cards—we fought fiercely in that match, and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this team. I’m excited to see how far we can progress in the Champions League.”
The USWNT is set to face New Zealand in Kansas City this Thursday.
