On Monday, the Turkish Football Federation announced an investigation involving over 150 referees from professional leagues who are suspected of betting on football matches.
At a press conference, federation president İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu revealed that government agencies have identified that 371 out of 571 active referees hold at least one betting account.
Among those with accounts, 152 referees have placed bets on football, which includes seven referees from the top division and 15 assistants.
Hacıosmanoğlu noted that 10 referees had bet on more than 10,000 matches, with one individual placing bets on an astonishing 18,227 games over five years, while others only engaged in betting once.
“We recognize that Turkish football requires reform,” Hacıosmanoğlu stated. “It is our responsibility to elevate Turkish football to its proper standing and cleanse it of all corruption.”
He confirmed that the federation’s disciplinary board will promptly address these cases.
