Two Arrested in Murder of…

Ecuadorian authorities have taken two individuals into custody in connection with the murder of soccer player Mario Pineida. The player was fatally shot earlier this week in an incident that also claimed the life of his partner and injured his mother, highlighting the escalating violence in the Andean country.

The 33-year-old defender for Barcelona de Guayaquil and former member of the national team was gunned down on Wednesday. His passing has sparked widespread mourning among Latin American soccer clubs and fans.

On Friday, Ecuador’s prosecutor’s office announced via X that the suspects, Cristian P.G. and Jimnery P.B., have appeared before a judge, who has ordered their preventive detention due to the compelling evidence against them and concerns regarding their potential flight.

The shooting occurred in the Samanes neighborhood of Guayaquil, located approximately 265 kilometers (165 miles) southwest of the capital city, Quito.

Security camera footage captured the moment Pineida and his partner exited a butcher shop and were subsequently ambushed by two assailants—one wearing a motorcycle helmet and the other a cap. Authorities have not disclosed the name of Pineida’s partner.

Pineida, who represented the Ecuadorian national team in eight matches, was not included in the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. His last appearance for Ecuador was during the 2021 Copa América, where he played as a substitute in a group-stage match against Brazil. He also competed in the competition in 2017.

Earlier this year, a 16-year-old player from Independiente del Valle was tragically killed by a stray bullet in Guayaquil. Additionally, in the preceding months, Maicol Valencia and Leandro Yépez from Exapromo Costa, along with Jonathan González of 22 de Junio, lost their lives due to gun violence.
