The United States women’s national team is set to face Brazil in June as part of their preparation for the 2027 World Cup at two venue locations.
The matches will be held at Neo Química Arena in São Paulo on June 6 and at Arena Castelão in Fortaleza on June 9.
This trip to Brazil marks a significant road journey for the USWNT, continuing a tradition of playing in the host country prior to World Cup tournaments to adapt and prepare.
“I’m thrilled we were able to organize these matches,” said USWNT head coach Emma Hayes. “Our goal is to compete against the top teams in challenging environments across the globe, and these fixtures do just that.”
“We require more games where the crowd is passionately against us, and I’m eager to see how our team rises to the challenge in such tough conditions.”
This will be the sixth consecutive World Cup for the USWNT where they will play a host nation in a World Cup venue before the actual tournament.
In their recent World Cup preparations, the USWNT faced New Zealand before the 2023 World Cup, France prior to the 2019 tournament, and Canada leading up to the 2015 event.
The team also traveled to Germany and China ahead of the 2011 and 2007 World Cups, respectively.
Brazil is a common opponent for the USWNT, who currently holds a 34 wins, 5 draws, and 4 losses record against them, although matches in Brazil are not frequent.
The last time the USWNT faced Brazil on their home soil was during a friendly in 2014. To date, only six of their 43 encounters have taken place in Brazil.
Significant encounters have occurred in major tournaments, most recently the 2024 Olympic gold medal game, which the US won 1-0. This victory marked the third time the USWNT defeated Brazil in an Olympic final, and they also famously overcame Brazil in a penalty shootout during the 2011 World Cup quarterfinals.
The last match the United States played in Brazil was during a disappointing run in the 2016 Olympics.
Additionally, the U-23 USWNT will accompany the team to Brazil in June for matches against professional clubs in São Paulo, a unique opportunity that U.S. Soccer is excited to offer.
Before heading to Brazil, the USWNT must first qualify for the 2027 World Cup. They will face El Salvador in a do-or-die quarterfinal match on November 27 at the Concacaf W Championship.
The tournament, which serves as a qualifying path for both the World Cup and Olympics, is set to kick off in Mansfield, Texas, before concluding with a final in Houston on December 5.
The 2027 World Cup is slated to begin on June 24 next year, with the group draw expected to take place in December.
