Midfielder Uruguay,
Manuel Ugarte,
has sustained a knee ligament injury during his last match in the World Cup group stage against
Spain, as confirmed by
Manchester United.
The 25-year-old was shown in visible distress as he was carried off on a stretcher early in the first half of Uruguay’s 1-0 loss.
Ongoing assessments are being conducted to understand the severity of the injury, and the timeline for his return remains indefinite.
United issued a statement stating, “We continue to evaluate the injury to determine the optimal treatment approach and the rehabilitation timeline.”
“Everyone is wishing Manuel a speedy recovery, and we will provide our full support throughout his recovery journey.”
Uruguay faced a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign, not managing to win any of their group stage matches and ending with just two points from draws against
Saudi Arabia and
Cape Verde.

Ugarte’s prospects at Old Trafford are unclear following a period of absence from the squad after United’s home defeat to Leeds in April.
He transferred to United from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal valued at up to £50.5 million ($66 million) in 2024, with two goals to his name in 69 appearances across all competitions.
