The Philadelphia Union announced on Wednesday that their sporting director, Ernst Tanner, has been placed on administrative leave as MLS reopens an investigation into accusations of inappropriate workplace behavior.
A recent report from The Guardian claims that Tanner made racist remarks about Black players, coaches, and referees, and also used sexist and anti-LGBTQ language in the workplace. These allegations were detailed in a complaint from the MLS Players’ Association to the league.
The Philadelphia Union stated, “We take all allegations of misconduct very seriously and are dedicated to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all associated with our club. There is no tolerance for discrimination, harassment, or any form of abusive conduct here, and all staff are required to undergo annual sensitivity training.”
“While a previous MLS investigation did not substantiate the allegations against Sporting Director Ernst Tanner, MLS has informed the Union that it will be reopening the inquiry, and the Union is fully cooperating. Mr. Tanner has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation. Throughout this process, the welfare of our players, fans, staff, and community remains our utmost priority.”
MLS had previously completed an investigation into these allegations but closed the case due to a lack of credible evidence. However, following the report’s release, the league decided to reopen the investigation to further examine the claims.
In a statement, the league noted, “MLS recently concluded an investigation into the allegations raised by the MLS Players Association, which stated that the claims had not been independently verified. The league promptly initiated an investigation, reaching out to over a dozen current and former players and club staff. All participants were given the option to remain anonymous and were assured they could speak without fear of retaliation.”
“A majority of those contacted chose to participate, including several who remained anonymous, while others declined to engage. After analyzing all available evidence and documentation, the investigation was unable to confirm the allegations. Nevertheless, due to the serious nature of the claims, Mr. Tanner has been mandated to participate in a structured remedial program focused on professional workplace behavior.”
“In light of new allegations and potentially new information disclosed in The Guardian article, MLS will reopen the investigation. The league encourages anyone with relevant information to utilize its anonymous reporting hotline to come forward.”
Tanner became the sporting director of the Union in 2018 and signed a contract extension in 2021.
