United States midfielder Malik Tillman scored a unique but clever goal, giving Bayer Leverkusen an early lead in their Champions League match against Villarreal on Wednesday. He later netted a second goal to extend the score to 2-0.
In the second half, Alex Grimaldo secured Leverkusen’s victory with a third goal, ensuring their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League.
Leverkusen began the match sitting at 20th in the 36-team standings, requiring a victory not only to secure a top-24 finish for the knockout phase but also to improve their position to at least 16th, which would ensure seeding in the upcoming playoffs.
In the 12th minute, Tillman intercepted a pass from Villarreal goalkeeper Arnau Tenas while crossing the penalty area, causing the ball to ricochet into the net.
The 23-year-old Tillman was mostly turned away from the Villarreal goal, trying to keep his balance as the ball went in for a 1-0 lead.
“He’s very astute in situations like this,” commented Leverkusen coach Kasper Hjulmand about Tillman. “He has a great sense of the game. Malik’s intelligence and work ethic are areas he’s focused on improving.”
Tillman’s second goal came in the 35th minute with a precise low shot from the edge of the penalty area.
With their performance, Hjulmand’s team finished in 16th place and will enjoy home advantage in the second leg against either Borussia Dortmund or Olympiakos. Those matches are scheduled between February 17 and 25.
Tillman is anticipated to play a significant role for the United States team during the World Cup in North America this summer.
