Cindy Parlow Cone, president of the United States Soccer Federation, has indicated that discussions regarding an extension of Mauricio Pochettino’s contract as the manager of the U.S. men’s national team are progressing positively, hinting at a potential announcement soon.
Pochettino joined U.S. Soccer in 2024 on a two-year contract that will conclude after the 2026 World Cup, succeeding former manager Gregg Berhalter.
“As we have mentioned, our discussions with Maurício and his team have been very productive,” Parlow Cone stated during an appearance on Apple TV. “We expect to have an announcement in the next few days.”
Under Pochettino’s leadership, the U.S. men’s national team successfully navigated the 2026 World Cup, winning Group D with victories over Australia and Paraguay, and then advancing past Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32. However, the team was eliminated in the round of 16 by a 4-1 defeat to Belgium.
Sources informed ESPN that the USSF is keen to keep Pochettino on board for another four-year cycle, aiming for his continued involvement through the 2030 World Cup set to be hosted in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
On July 16, Pochettino mentioned on Spanish radio Cadena Cope that he and his coaching staff were reviewing U.S. Soccer’s proposal, weighing their options before providing a response. “We are evaluating it,” he remarked. “[U.S. Soccer] has extended an offer for me to continue, and we will see. We plan to [make] a decision next week.” He had also engaged in discussions about the potential for an extension back in May.
Pochettino added, “[U.S. Soccer Federation CEO JT Batson] asked if we are open to hearing about the federation’s project for the next four years. We certainly expressed our willingness to listen. Would it be worth our while to commit to others if we weren’t open to considering it?]
The U.S. men’s national team is expected to play friendlies during the upcoming September FIFA international window.
