USWNTs Coffey Begins…

Sam Coffey, midfielder for the United States women’s national team, underwent minor knee surgery earlier this week, as announced by her club, Manchester City.

Coffey joined Manchester City in January from NWSL‘s Portland Thorns FC for a transfer fee reported to be $875,000.

Since her arrival, Coffey has appeared in 10 matches across all competitions for Manchester City, who recently clinched the Women’s Super League title for the first time in ten years.

Details about the specific injury or surgery were not disclosed by Manchester City. The club indicated that Coffey will focus on her recovery through the summer, gearing up for the forthcoming season.

In early June, the USWNT is scheduled to play two away matches against Brazil, the host of the 2027 World Cup, but Coffey will miss these fixtures. World Cup qualifying is set to commence in November.

Since making her debut in 2022, Coffey has established herself as a key player in the USWNT midfield, serving as the starting defensive midfielder during their journey to the 2024 Olympic gold medal.

Coffey has contributed five goals in 46 appearances for her country and has emerged as one of the team’s leaders at the age of 27.

As champions of England’s WSL, Manchester City has secured a direct slot in the league phase of the 2026-27 UEFA Women’s Champions League, with high expectations for Coffey to play a pivotal role in their European ambitions.

“Sam’s reputation as one of the world’s best speaks for itself, and we’re thrilled she’s chosen to join us over other potential options,” remarked Therese Sjogran, Manchester City Women’s director of football, at the time of Coffey’s signing in January.

“We are confident she possesses all the qualities needed to excel at City and in the WSL, and we’re eager to see how she can further enhance our already talented squad.”

“Sam is at the peak of her game, and her decision to join us reflects the significant progress we’ve made as a club and our ambitions moving forward.”
