In a thrilling opening match of the World Cup held in Philadelphia, a late goal from Amad Diallo secured a 1-0 victory for the Ivory Coast against Ecuador. The match featured relentless action, with both teams going close to scoring.
Ecuador hit the woodwork three times, while the Ivory Coast also rattled the crossbar. It was Diallo, who came on as a substitute, who delivered the decisive moment in the 90th minute, placing the ball into the corner of the net.
During an entertaining first half, Ecuador created the majority of the chances, including a missed opportunity from Enner Valencia, who shot over after taking advantage of a slip by Emmanuel Agbadou in the penalty area. John Yeboah hit the bar with a long-range effort, and Alan Minda was also denied by the woodwork after receiving a through ball from Pedro Vite.
The 19-year-old Yan Diomande was active on Ivory Coast’s right side but his efforts didn’t yield results, as Nicholas Pepê missed a chance by taking too long and compounding his mistake by shooting into teammate Elye Wahi.
At the start of the second half, Valencia struck the outer post following a slick one-two with Gonzalo Plata, but the Ivory Coast became more dangerous after halftime.
Diomande had two chances that went high and wide after making his way into the box, and Wahi’s header from a cross hit the crossbar. Ecuador’s Plata saw his shot from outside the area saved by Yahia Fofana, while Joel Ordóñez sent a header over the bar from a free kick. However, it was Amad who finally found the breakthrough, guiding the ball inside the post from just outside the box after a powerful run and cross from Wilfried Singo.
