Van Dijk: Isak Will…

Virgil van Dijk has praised Alexander Isak as “outstanding,” expressing confidence in his potential at Liverpool following Isak’s opening goal in the team’s 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace.

Scoring his debut Premier League goal at Anfield, Isak marked his return from a broken fibula that had sidelined him for 100 days. Despite the setbacks since his record move from Newcastle United, Van Dijk is confident in Isak’s ability to excel on Merseyside.

“It’s an understatement to say he’s had a challenging year,” Van Dijk commented. “He can explain it better himself, but the injuries and their timing have been unfortunate. Now that he’s fit, we all recognize his potential as he demonstrates in training and during matches.”

“It’s up to him to keep proving himself—hopefully after the World Cup when we’ll face each other on the pitch. I’m pleased with his efforts, and I’m fully confident he will succeed here.”

“As a striker, you could go 85 minutes without impacting the game and still score the winner, and it’s celebrated. For defenders, however, a single mistake can overshadow a solid performance. Regardless, those of us who are teammates appreciate how exceptional he is.”

“It’s about gaining match experience and confidence, and for him, scoring goals is key. I have no concerns about him. We want him to contribute more than just goals, and he certainly can if he maintains his work ethic and health, which I believe he will.”

Isak’s compatriot and fellow summer signing, Florian Wirtz, also found the net late in the game to secure the win for Arne Slot’s team.

Discussing the impact of Wirtz and Isak on Liverpool’s future, Van Dijk stated: “That was always our intention. These two players were specifically brought in to make a difference. It hasn’t been an easy season for anyone, including them, but their talent is evident. Continuous development is crucial; it’s about understanding what it means to be a Liverpool player, both on and off the pitch—maintaining personal standards and consistently striving to be your best every few days.”

“This season has not lived up to our expectations, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that doesn’t happen again next year because that’s not the Liverpool standard.”
