Van Dijk Responds to…

Virgil van Dijk has responded to criticism from Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney, asserting that claims Liverpool has displayed a lack of leadership this season are “lazy.”

During an appearance last week on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England striker highlighted Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, criticizing their body language this season as “not right.”

In response to Rooney’s remarks after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, Van Dijk stated, “I didn’t hear him last year.”

“It doesn’t bother me, to be honest. I respect him as a legend and a big player who has inspired many. However, I believe that comment reflects a bit of lazy criticism. That’s just my personal opinion. It’s easy to single out players, but he knows that we work together to improve,” he added.

“As I mentioned last year, when things are going well, you don’t hear such comments. Pundits have a role to play, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. No hard feelings; I take it personally.”

Goals from Salah and Ryan Gravenberch helped Liverpool end a streak of four consecutive Premier League defeats against Villa. This victory pushes Arne Slot’s squad into third place, trailing leaders Arsenal by seven points.

Van Dijk remarked, “It was a solid performance.”

He further stated, “Success in defense is a team effort — everyone from the forwards to midfield, the defense, and the goalkeeper plays a role. That was vital for securing the clean sheet and we have the ability to score goals. We got the win, and we move forward.”

Van Dijk concluded, “My aim is to perform not only for myself but for the team and the club. That has been my focus over the years. I want to win, particularly at home. During challenging times, I always strive to support my teammates.”
