Virgil van Dijk has dismissed claims of any “disharmony” within the Liverpool squad, asserting that managing criticism on social media will pose a significant challenge for future players.
This season has already been rocky for Liverpool, who are currently in sixth place in the Premier League standings. The team has endured a winless stretch of five league matches before bouncing back with a strong 4-1 win over Newcastle United, while head coach Arne Slot has faced mounting external pressure lately.
“As players, we all understand that if we don’t perform, we face criticism — that’s simply part of the game,” Van Dijk stated. “We need to deliver the goods, which is something we’ve struggled to do consistently. Unfortunately, we find ourselves discussing this issue every few days.”
“Saturday was a solid performance, just like midweek against Qarabag. Now we must focus on working hard for the upcoming match against Man City and replicate that success.”

When asked if Slot deserves more recognition given his past successes, Van Dijk replied: “Who is disrespecting him? That’s the key question. Are those disrespectful comments coming from people whose opinions we should actually care about?”
“I could also point out players who face disrespect. Who is the source of this disrespect? Is it someone whose opinion matters, or is it simply noise we can ignore while focusing on achieving our goals as Liverpool players? That’s a responsibility we discuss continuously.”
“If you delve into social media, one week you might be hailed as a hero, and the next, you are a villain. I mentioned last week that this situation is only becoming more complex year after year. For the next generation, it will represent a significant challenge, just as it is for us now.”

Van Dijk continued: “The reality is, we are the reigning Premier League champions, yet we haven’t performed to our potential consistently. That’s undeniable. We have to accept the criticism and keep pushing forward.”
“I don’t believe there are any issues regarding togetherness within the squad. There’s no real disharmony. Challenges arise, and each person handles them in their own way, but it’s crucial that we navigate these situations together and find solutions.”
“Overcoming these difficulties will only strengthen our team. If we emerge from this as we should, given our quality, it can ultimately enhance both our performance as a team and as individual players.”
