Virgil van Dijk has applauded his teammate Florian Wirtz for his efforts and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to Liverpool following Wirtz’s first goal for the club during Saturday’s 2-1 triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Since transferring to Anfield for an initial fee of £100 million from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, Wirtz had faced scrutiny for his offensive contributions, but he broke his scoring drought in this match, helping Liverpool secure a vital victory and climb to fourth place in the Premier League.
“I was really pleased for him,” Van Dijk commented. “He had an excellent game, and the whole team was outstanding in the first half. It’s wonderful to see him score, and I hope it leads to many more goals in the future.”
“He’s adapting to the style we want to play at Liverpool and getting used to the intensity of the game. He did experience some cramping after about 70 minutes, but that’s just part of football. He needs to keep pushing forward. That goal was crucial for us as we look ahead to New Year’s Day.”
“He moves around a lot, covering positions on the left and in the center.”
“He’s a very intelligent player who is at ease on the ball. He finds spaces in between defenders and can be a significant asset to the team.”
“He’s ambitious in terms of making contributions through goals and assists. His work ethic and the chances he creates are what stand out even more. I’m really happy for him, as is the entire team. You could see the joy in the celebrations. Everyone is thrilled for him.”

Liverpool is currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak across all competitions and has clinched four consecutive victories. However, Van Dijk acknowledged the need for further improvement as the team aims to ascend the Premier League standings.
“We have to work on our game management,” the defender noted. “It’s about training and learning from our experiences to better handle situations like the one we faced today.”
“We will analyze and discuss this. I understand it may sound simple, but it’s a challenging task. It’s a process, and we must keep striving to improve. If it were easy, we would have fixed it already.”
