Advancing in Europe offers clear financial benefits, and Hearts could see both departures and arrivals before the transfer window shuts.
The club has signed 12 players this summer, with an even higher number moving on.
With at least six more European matches to come this season, former Hearts player Ryan Stevenson believes further recruitment is necessary.
“Given the League Cup, the six games in Europe, and the all-important league campaign, they’ll definitely need another two or three,” he told BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound.
Another Tynecastle favorite, Allan Preston, is confident Hearts are prepared for that task.
“They have targets lined up if needed,” he said. “They’re ready. They don’t wait for things to happen; they act early.
“If required, they’ll press the button before the window closes. They’ll improve and produce better.”
Midfield may now be a priority after Tom Renaud’s first-half injury.
“That was the biggest disappointment of the evening,” lamented Vrancken.
“It’s not looking good, but I hope he’s OK. We have to assess that area because he was excellent in the last game.
“We’re discussing it every day and will see how things develop in the coming weeks.”
