A peak audience of 9.1 million watched England’s dramatic World Cup victory over Mexico on BBC TV and BBC iPlayer on Monday.
Despite the 02:00 BST kick-off for UK viewers, the match averaged 7.8 million viewers across BBC TV and BBC iPlayer.
This is the highest audience ever recorded for a live UK broadcast airing between 02:00 and 04:00.
It was also a record day for BBC Sport, drawing 15 million unique visitors to the website and app, and 330 million video views across its social platforms.
Jude Bellingham scored twice in a breathless encounter, with England withstanding Mexico’s comeback at the Azteca Stadium to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Catch-up viewing was strong too, with BBC highlights streamed 5.9 million times on BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app, and the BBC Football YouTube channel.
The BBC Two repeat from 07:10 attracted a peak audience of 1.1 million, averaging 900,000 viewers.
